Remembering

This is a week of remembrance. Thursday 9th November is the commemoration of Kristallnacht, the  night of broken glass, that happened 85 years ago on 9th and 10th November 1938, and was a harbinger of what was to come. And on Sunday it is Remembrance Sunday, heralding the end of a terrible war. In one week we are remembering the beginnings and the end of the war.

One of the big questions for us today is how we reflect, remember, and connect with our history so that we can help usher in a different future. How can we continue to commemorate meaningfully when those who witnessed what happened are no longer with us. What can and should we do? What role can we play? What are the ways that descendants of those who lived through those terrible years can help carry that story and share it with others?

JW3 is hosting an event tonight, at 7.30 pm with the organisation generation2generation,  which we invited to speak to us last January, and is an opportunity to learn more about how the next generations are holding the stories of their families.   Kristallnacht Commemoration 2023

At Shabbat tomorrow night Friday 10th November, 6.30 pm, we will have time to share our family stories, to be together, and to spread a little light in these dark times. Please email Naomi for the address.

And on Sunday at 10.45 am there is an opportunity to remember together with the other faith communities at the Wood Green War memorial, opposite Haringey Civic Centre, High Rd, Wood Green, followed by refreshments and an opportunity to meet members from the Muslim and Christian communities.

With the world feeling so fractured, with people worrying about how to talk and meet others, with fear being the main emotion, it feels even more important to be able to go to an event like this and reach out across the faith boundaries. If anyone is interested in going, please contact Rabbi Sandra who will be attending as part of reaching out to our neighbours, and strengthening the bonds between us.
